4 Things to Consider When Building Your Dream Closet
When we started planning for creating my dream closet, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted it to look like but I knew how I wanted to feel whenever I would be in there. When most people think of dream closet, they think massive Kardashian level closet. Well, I don’t have Kardashian money so I by no means have that vision when I think of Onyee’s Dream Closet. Instead I think of clean and coordinated dressing room where I could comfortable try on new items, put outfits together, and even hang out in with my sisters. My closet might not be massive and expensive looking, but it is perfect and a dream for me. Here is my dream closet!
To get to this point, a lot of thought and planning was done. I am here to not only share my final closet look, but to also share what I considered when I was planning for this closet. If you have plans to create your dream closet in the future, here are 4 things you need to think about when creating your dream closet.
Budget
When thinking about how much you want to spend on your closet, think about what you can afford, quality of the closet you will get at the end and how close of a dream closet you will be able to get to with your budget. When we first moved into our home, I thought I wanted to use a custom closet company to do our closet. That would have cost us over $10,000! Our closet size is large but the shape of it and what we wanted to do with our closet is simple. To cut cost (by a lot), we decided to go with Ikea PAX closet. Their system works for us and it would allow us more room to further customize it and make it our own.
Size
When doing your research of what kind of closet you’d like to create, look at closets that are similar in size and shape to your own. It doesn’t help looking at massive closet inspos on Pintrest when your closet is much smaller. This not only helps with having a realistic vision, but will give you better ideas for what can go into your closet. Do you have room for a vanity area? Then you can look at closets similar to your size with vanity spaces in it. Does your closet have a window? Look at closets with windows so you get ideas on what people do in those kinds of spaces.
What is Going In Your Closet
This is probably the most important thing to think about when planning your dream closet. What is actually going to be stored in your closet? How much of it can you put in there? If you have tons of shoes, plan to set it up where you can store all your shoes in there or declutter so that you are not struggling to fit items in your closet. Before I started my closet, I went through every single item I potentially wanted in my closet to do two things:
Get rid of items I did not want, did not fit, or I knew most likely I was not going to wear or use. I did not want to put energy towards finding spaces for items I wasn’t using.
Took inventory of every item I did want to keep. I wanted to know how many shoes, dresses, pants, jewelry, etc. I had so that I knew how many of them I could fit. I wanted a specific spot in my closet for every piece of item.
When you know what you have and how many of it you have, it makes it easier to be strategic with placement of each item going into your closet. This allows you to know if you are going to create a large space for shoes and a small space for accessories (or vice versa).
Personal Style
There are so many different ways to add personal style to a closet. No two closets look and feel alike. Do you want your closet to be white and clean or dark and moody? Do you want lots of pink or touches of gold? When you know this, you can easily incorporate your personal style through decor pieces such as a rug, a cushion, or wall art. You can also incorporate your style through adding hardware or changing out the light fixtures.
I hope this helps you plan your own special dream closet. I’ve linked all the items I used in my closet to make it my own. Feel free to check it out and purchase if it fits your style as well!
