What to Include in a Kids Play Room
When we purchased our home, we wanted a space exclusively for the kids. In our old home, we stored the kids toys in storage boxes that were placed in the dining room. We had a very tiny office, smaller than the size of a closet, for where the kids did school work. Mind you, we share that space with them as well. Toys and books were also in their room. It might not have been ideal, but we made it work. Now that we are in a bigger home with much more room to work with, I knew I wanted on single space where the kids could do everything they wanted. I wanted a central location where the kids study, read books, had play, watched tv, and anything else they wanted to do. I am so happy to finally have this space for them in our home.
If you are looking to create a similar space for your children in your home, here are key components to include to make your kids play room a place they will truly love.
Toy Storage
Having storage for all the kids toys is nice, but having picture labels just changes the game! I love having an organized method of storing all those stuffed animals and toy cars away. But it is important to create a system where the kids, whether they can read or not, know exactly where to put their toys once they are done playing with them.
Library Corner
My older kids love to read and the little ones enjoy being read to. Having a small library where they can see all the books they have available to them has made reading time much more enjoyable for them. Not only do they know that every book should be put back on the shelf here, but it makes it easy for me to know what books may need to be replaced.
Study Space
We don’t have the luxury of having a separate study area for the kids to do homework and study. Because of this, it was critical we had a location in the kids play room where they would be able study and do their homework comfortably without being totally distracted by all the different activities that could potentially go on in the play room.
The kids are really happy with their play room. Whenever they have friends over, it’s easy to allow them to have independent fun time in this space. We are planning on adding an art gallery section filled with the kids art work. Displaying your children’s work is another piece that should be included in a kids play room. What are the core components of your kids play room? Planning to create a similar space for your kids? What are you planning to put in it?
