Being a Working Mom and Digital Content Creator
The question I get the most is how do I do it all? Managing a household of 6, being a influencer and working full time. To give you some context on how crazy my schedule can be, here are a little bit of facts about my life:
I work in the Energy Industry as an HSE (health, environmental, safety) Compliance Specialist. I interpret health and safety regulations for the company I work for and develop programs to support health and safety compliance. My job is very time consuming and takes majority of my day, Monday through Friday.
I have four children: two 1 year olds and two 6 year olds. Although I do have a nanny, these four take up all my time when I’m not working.
I also work as a digital content creator. I create content for my personal blog, Instagram and Youtube. Anyone in this space knows it can be very time consuming, especially when I am making content for other brands.
Putting in time for my 9-5 job is pretty much set. I commit 9 hours (8am - 4pm) each day to it. In order to accomplish everything I need to do for my family and for myself as a digital content creator, I do these three things:
Start Early
I wake up at 6am every morning, Mondays through Fridays. I mentioned previously that I start work at 8am, so this gives me two hours to really get myself together before I have to work. During this time, I get myself ready for the day, read my bible and get the older twins ready for school. My husband takes the older twins to school by 730am so this leaves me 30 minutes to write in my planner and think about what I want to accomplish for the day.
Utilize My Evenings Wisely
Once work is done, I have the rest of the day to myself. Trust me when I say by 4pm, I’m ready to just chill with the kids for the rest of the day. However, in order to accomplish the goals I’ve set for myself, I can’t always do that. I give myself one hr (4-5pm) to check-in with the kids and rest a little before I go back to working. Once 5pm hits, I use the rest of the evening to work on content. I don’t create content during the week (I leave that for the weekends). I created an editorial schedule for myself so I work on what my editorial schedule shows me I need to work on. This could be anything from jotting down Instagram posts I want to shoot for the weekend to writing out blog posts and Instagram captions.
If you would like to know more about the editorial schedule and calendar I’ve set up for myself, let me know in the comments.
Commit to the Kids Night Time Routine
Because I know my schedule from Monday to Friday does not allow me a lot of interaction with my kids at times, I commit to putting energy to my children every night from 8pm until when they go to bed at 930pm. Their night time routine includes giving the kids a bath, reading their bible with them, doing our family prayer which includes singing and praying, and tucking each of them into bed.
If you would like to know more about my nighttime routine with the kids, let me know in the comments.
Are you a parent with a 9-5 job as well as a side business? What are some things you do to manage the many roles you play?
Until next time,
