Productivity Hack for Moms

One of the biggest dilemmas I have faced as a working mom is figuring out how to manage everything in my life. When it comes to managing all the tasks I have to do for my 9-5 job, meeting deadlines for collab and blog work, having dinner ready for the family every night and making some time for myself, I just don’t have enough space in my brain to manage it all! And I can’t be the only one feeling this way! Through many trial and errors, I finally came up with a system that has helped me to continuously be on top of all the tasks we moms have to do without having the feeling of anxiety or frusturation. My formula is:

Goals + Tasks + Execution = Completion

This might look like a random word problem but trust me, this is the golden ticket to organizing your whole life! I want us all to win so I created a free guide called The Working Moms Guide to Doing It All, which shows how you can implement this formula into your life. I’ll share with you on how to get access to this guide at the end of this post.

Goals

Setup weekly goals.

The first thing we want to do is set ourselves up for continuous success each day. Rather than focusing on creating a list of "to do" items that we never get done, think about the overarching goal. Setup 1-3 weekly goals for your 9-5 job, your business, home management, and self care. Yes, self care needs to be managed with as much care and attention as your work and family related agendas.

Write goals that are…

specific, realistic, and timely. These goals should clearly state what it is you want to accomplish by the end of the week. Make sure it’s a goal you can actually achieve, even if time constraints or last minute changes occur. For example, don’t set a goal that require resources you don’t currently have access to. Set a specific day of the week as your end of week deadline. My end of week deadline is Friday.

Example Goal (for my 9-5): Be prepared to present three alternatives to the project team by Thursday.

Tasks

Plan out daily tasks.

For each goal you have established, set specific tasks that need to get done in order to accomplish your goal by the end of the week. No need to do it all in one day. Choose 2-4 tasks to do per day for each bucket (work, business, home, etc.). Make your work load for the day realistic for you. Prioritize tasks to know what needs to get done first, second, third, etc. Don't get the task done by end of the day? No worries! Have it prioritized to get done for the next day! Remember, the objective is to accomplish your set goals by the end of the week, not necessarily the tasks by the end of each day.

Tasks should be…

short, easy to accomplish, and help you move closer toward meeting your end of week goals. When determining what tasks you should be doing, think about the following:

What do you need to do to get your goal completed by end of the week?

How many tasks should you schedule each day to get your goal completed by the end of the week?

Example Goal (for my 9-5): Be prepared to present three alternatives to the project team by Thursday.

Breakdown of goal into tasks:

Review notes and data to develop possible alternatives (Monday)

Narrow down alternatives down to three (Tuesday)

Create talking points for each alternative (Tuesday)

Practice talking through each alternative with coworker (Wednesday)

Present alternatives to project team (Thursday)

Execute

Planning is just half of the work. We need to be intentional about our plans and follow through to completion! If you follow these steps to doing it all, I assure you that you will be able to accomplish so much more than ever before without the guilt of neglecting family or yourself and without feeling overwhelmed by the workload us busy moms have!

You’ve completed the guide but…

…it doesn’t count just because you wrote it down! Different ways I help myself stay focused on executing my tasks is by making sure I complete the second step of this guide successfully by completing very short and easy tasks. Yes, I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s the most effective way to ensuring execution and meeting all your goals!

Other methods that can help you is:

Set alarm reminders on your phone for each task.

Show your plan to your hubby or best friend to help hold you accountable.

Review your completed guide everyday, reminding you of the tasks you’ve set for yourself each day.

Have your goals placed somewhere you will always see like your refrigerator, in your phone, or at your work space.
